Sun Microsystems

US-based computer manufacturer founded in 1982 with the motto ‘the network is the computer’. Sun specializes in office networks, workstations, and servers running Solaris, a version of the Unix operating system. Sun pioneered the concept of open systems – technology that is available to other manufacturers – and in 1995 released Java, a platform-independent programming language, which enables Web pages to include applications that can run on any computer.
