Jazz Singer, The

Film in 1927 that introduced sound to feature films and effectively signalled the end of silent era. It starred Al Jolson as a cantor's son with show business ambitions. In fact, almost all the dialogue was relayed in captions, leaving the songs (for example, ‘Mammy’) to constitute the ‘talkie’ breakthrough. It was directed by Alan Crosland (1894-1936)
