Byblos

Ancient Phoenician city (modern Jebeil), 32 km/20 mi north of Beirut, Lebanon. Known to the Assyrians and Babylonians as Gubla, it had a thriving export of cedar and pinewood to Egypt as early as 1500 BC. In Roman times it boasted an amphitheatre, baths, and a temple, and was known for its celebration of the resurrection of Adonis, worshipped as a god of vegetation.

Over the past week I have picked my way through the rubble of Dahia in downtown Beirut, now resembling London's East End at the height of the blitz, and across the south of Lebanon in towns such as Bint Jbeil whose centers look as if they have been hit by an earthquake.
Clearly it was easier to blockade Yasser Arafat and his few untrained bodyguards in the Mukata'ah compound in Ramallah than to conquer Bint Jbeil over and over again.
Work would begin immediately to repair damaged homes and clear the rubble from the hardest-hit villages like Bint Jbeil, Aitaroun and Khiam.
