Jean Baptiste de la Salle, St (1654–1719)

French priest. He was canon of Reims, France, and founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. In 1683 he resigned his canonry, and, with 12 others, took a vow to devote himself for life to the teaching of the poor. The headquarters of the institution since 1705 has been at Saint-Yon (Rouen), France. Salle was canonized in 1900. His feast day is 15 May.
