Jedlička, Rudolf (1920– )

Czech baritone and administrator. He studied in Vienna and Prague and made his debut at Dresden in 1944, as Marcello. He sang in opera at Prague from 1945 and produced at Usti-nad-Labem 1945–49. From 1958 he was a guest singer with the Berlin Staatsoper, and appeared in Vienna, Russia, and Germany as Don Giovanni, Posa, and Rossini's Figaro. He visited Edinburgh in 1964 and 1970 with the Prague National Opera in the first UK performances of Janáček's From the House of the Dead and The Excursions of Mr Brouček. He was appointed director of the National Theatre at Prague in 1989.
