Jefferson| City and seat of Greene County, in west-central Iowa, 58 km/36 mi west of Ames; population (1990) 4,300. It is an agricultural centre, producing farm machinery and processing soybeans. |
| The town was named after US President Thomas Jefferson. The county seat from 1854, there have been three courthouses: 1856–70, 1870–1917, and 1917– . Attractions include the county historical museum, a telephone museum, and the Mahaney Memorial Carillon Tower (about 50 m/164 ft high). Jefferson is the birthplace of statistician George Gallup, and astronaut Loren Shriver. |
Jefferson| Unincorporated community in Jefferson Parish, southeastern Louisiana; population (1990) 14,500. Jefferson stands on the east bank of the Mississippi River, 8 km/5 mi west of New Orleans, of which it is a mainly residential suburb. The settlement of Metairie lies just northeast. |
