Jefferson Parish

Administrative district of southeastern Louisiana; area 901 sq km/348 sq mi, population (1990) 448,300. Jefferson Parish lies in the Mississippi Delta, and is bounded to the north by Lake Pontchartrain, to the south by the Gulf of Mexico, and to the west and southwest by the city of New Orleans. Its seat is at Gretna.

Jefferson Parish incorporates a number of residential and industrial suburbs of New Orleans, such as Metairie, Kenner, and Gretna, as well as the New Orleans International Airport. Barataria Bay lies at its far southern end.
