Jeffersonville

City and seat of Clark County, southeastern Indiana, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky; population (1990) 21,800.

Jeffersonville was founded in 1802 on the site of Fort Steuben by veterans of the expedition to the Northwest Territory led by George Rogers Clark. The town was laid out by Thomas Jefferson and served (1813–16) as the territorial capital. A river port and railway junction, it has also been a shipbuilding centre since the 19th century. The famous ‘Louisville Slugger’ baseball bats are manufactured here by the firm of Hillerich & Bradsby. Other industries refine oil and turn out wood products, chemicals, and machinery. A US army quartermaster's depot is located here. There is also a campus of Indiana University Southeast in the city.
