Jeffries, James J(ackson) (1875–1953)

US boxer. After winning the heavyweight championship in 1899 (in only his 13th professional fight) with a knockout of Bob Fitzsimmons, he defended his title seven times before retiring undefeated in 1905. In 1910 he lost in a comeback fight as the ‘great white hope’ against Jack Johnson, who knocked him out in the 15th round.

He was born in Carroll, Ohio. His career record was 20 victories, one loss, and two draws. On retiring he promoted amateur boxing.
