Jhelum

River rising in Kashmir and flowing into the province of Punjab in Pakistan; length about 720 km/450 mi. The Mangla Dam (1967), one of the world's largest earth-filled dams, stores flood waters for irrigation and hydroelectricity. The Jhelum is one of the five rivers that give Punjab its name and was known in the ancient world as the Hydaspes, on whose banks Alexander the Great won a battle in 326 BC.

It is navigable for about 110 km/68 mi in Kashmir, before passing through Wular Lake and the Vale of Kashmir. It emerges from the Baramula Pass, and again becomes navigable. About 400 km/250 mi from its source it enters the plain of Punjab and after another 320 km/200 mi joins the Chenab River.

Jhelum

Town on the Jhelum River (a tributary of the Indus) in Pakistan; population (2001 est) 157,600. Timber floated down from Kashmiri forests is collected here for boatbuilding. Oil has been discovered in the area.
