gelada| Large African monkey Therapithecus gelada related to the baboon. Geladas live in family groups consisting of related females and their offspring with a single reproducing adult male. As their main food is grass they spend most of the day feeding. |
| Gelada families share territories and form bands of up to 300 individuals. Bands may merge with other bands to form herds of more than 800. The world population of geladas is estimated (2000) to be between 100,000 and 200,000. |
| Females reach sexual maturity and give birth to a single infant every two years. Lifespan in the wild is 15–20 years. |
