Morton, Jelly Roll (1890–1941)

US New Orleans-style jazz pianist, singer, and composer. Influenced by Scott Joplin, he was a pioneer in the development of jazz from ragtime to swing by improvising and imposing his own personality on the music. His 1920s band was called the Red Hot Peppers. In 1997 Morton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
