Jenkins, Graeme (James Ewers)

Jenkins, Graeme (James Ewers) (1958- )

English conductor. He studied at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music, London. He led Verdi's Stiffelio while a student (1981) and The Beggar's Opera for Kent Opera in 1982 (he returned for Figaro and Entführung). He conducted Cesti's La Dori at the Spitalfields Festival and was artistic director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera 1986-91 (directing Simon Boccanegra, and operas by Britten). In 1987 he made both his Glyndebourne debut (with Carmen) and his European debut (with Hänsel und Gretel at Geneva). He conducted Così fan tutte for the English National Opera Ensemble in 1988 (and returned for the first performance of Timon of Athens by Oliver in 1991). He has also led concerts with the Hallé Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He was appointed musical director of the Dallas Opera in 1994.
