Jenkins, John

Jenkins, John (1592-1678)

English composer, lutenist, and string player. He composed both in the traditional English style and in the new Italian fashion, and wrote a large quantity of music for consorts of viols, which was popular with amateur players.

He lived under the patronage of the gentry and nobility, especially Sir Hamon L'Estrange in Norfolk and Lord North, whose sons, including Roger, he taught music. His last patron was Sir Philip Wodehouse at Kimberley.
