Jenkins, Robert (lived 1731)

British sea captain. He appeared before the House of Commons and produced what he claimed was his ear which, he alleged, had been cut off by the Spaniards who had boarded his vessel off Havana in 1731, and accused him of smuggling. This provoked the War of Jenkins's Ear between Britain and Spain in 1739 and led to Robert Walpole's downfall in 1742.
