Jennings

City and seat of Jefferson Davis Parish, southwestern Louisiana, 50 km/31 mi east of Lake Charles; population (1990) 11,300.

Jennings is the market and processing centre for an agricultural region that grows huge amounts of rice, as well as some market garden produce. The first oil strike in Louisiana (1901) occurred 8 km/5 mi northeast of the city, and oil remains the second most important element in the local economy.

City in St Louis County, east-central Missouri, a residential suburb of St Louis 13 km/8 mi north-northwest of the city centre; population (1990) 15,900.
