US rock-and-roll and country singer and pianist. His trademark was the boogie-woogie-derived ‘pumping piano’ style in hits such as ‘Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On’ and ‘Great Balls of Fire’ (1957); later recordings include ‘What Made Milwaukee Famous’ (1968).

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one of its ten charter members, in 1986.
