Jessonda

Opera by Ludwig Spohr (libretto by E H Gehe, based on Lemierre's tragedy La Veuve de Malabar), first produced in Kassel, Germany, on 28 July 1823. In the story, the Portuguese general Tristan discovers his long-lost love Jessonda is to be killed as a sacrifice, but has sworn not to interfere in local ceremonies. He is free to rescue her, and does so, after the Indians break a ceasefire.
