Jhansi

City in Uttar Pradesh, India, 286 km/178 mi southwest of Lucknow; population (2001) 382,300. It is a railway and road junction; its economy is based on agricultural trading and steel. Its fort was built by the Moguls in 1613, and it was a Maratha capital from 1770 to 1853. Jhansi was the scene of a massacre of British civilians in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny.
