In opposition to the North's policy of gradualism and negotiation diplomacy, Jiang Jieshi was strident in his public declaration of November 1926 that "the people of China would never be satisfied with a mere revision of the treaties. Rather, he shared with Jiang Jieshi a profound ignorance of Vietnam and its politics, a distaste for French colonialism and a strong desire to keep order and withdraw Chinese troops as quickly as possible. Whampoa graduates thus became an important political base for the Guomindang government, and particularly for Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek), though, as Li shows in a study of the Whampoa alumni-dominated Young Officers' Movement of the 1930s, Jiang successfully restricted any nationalist impulses toward independent political action. |
