Jihlava

Town in eastern Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, on the River Jihlava, 140 km/87 mi southeast of Prague; population (1991) 52,300. Trade is mainly agricultural, and industries include textiles and engineering. Silver deposits were mined from the 8th century; the town being prosperous as a royal mint in the Middle Ages. There are many historic buildings.

Jihlava is the largest town in the Bohemian-Moravian highlands, and has one of the largest town squares in Europe.

The composer Gustav Mahler spent his childhood here.
