Jingdezhen

Town in Jiangxi, China; population (1994) 377,500. Ming blue-and-white china was produced here; the clay kaolin is named after Kaoling, a hill east of Jingdezhen. Some of the best Chinese porcelain is still made here.

History

Jingdezhen's porcelain industry was established before AD 1000 and reached its height during the Song dynasty (960-1279). The industry declined after its kilns were damaged during the Taiping Rebellion (1850-64), but was revived in the 1950s.
