Jinja

Town in Busoga Province, Uganda, on the north shore of Lake Victoria, east of Kampala; population (1991) 61,000. Industries include steel milling, engineering, textiles, grain milling, food processing, and brewing. Nearby is the Owen Falls Dam (1954).

Founded in 1901, Jinja grew slowly until the opening of the Owen Falls dam and power station. The town's prosperity declined during the rule (1971-79) of former president Idi Amin.
