Jo, Sumi (1962– )

Korean soprano. She studied in Seoul and Rome and made her debut at Trieste in 1986, as Gilda. She also sang in France, and was discovered by Karajan singing Barbarina and Oscar at Salzburg in 1989–90. She performed at Munich from 1988, and at Vienna from 1989. Her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut was in 1988, and she appeared in Fra Diavalo at La Scala in 1992. Her coloratura has been admired as the Queen of the Night at Chicago (1990) and elsewhere. Other roles include Matilde in Rossini's Elisabetta (in Naples) and Thetis in Jommelli's Fetonte (at La Scala).
