John I (1357–1433)

King of Portugal from 1385. An illegitimate son of Pedro I, he was elected by the Cortes (parliament). His claim was supported by an English army against the rival king of Castile, thus establishing the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance in 1386.

He married Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt.

Celebration' (1953) is a wonderful, satirical account of a drunken birthday party where the celebrants, in various states of somnolence and incoherence, with their mask-like faces reminiscent of James Ensor, are clearly the ancestors of the lithographs she published this year to illustrate a short story by the Portuguese writer João de Melo entitled O Vinho (Wine).
They are made up of Nuno Sousa (vocals and guitar); Pedro Gonçalves (guitar); João Carujo, (drums)and Sérgio Seabra (bass).
