Jochum, Eugen

Jochum, Eugen (1902–1987)

German conductor. He studied piano and organ at Augsburg Conservatory 1914–22 and composition at the Munich Academy of Music 1922–24. After some time as a répétiteur (tutor) in Munich and Kiel, he conducted at Mannheim and Duisburg, becoming music director of the Hamburg Staatsoper 1934–45. From 1949 he was conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra. His US debut, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, was in 1961. He conducted Bartók and Stravinsky during World War II in Hamburg and was well known for Bach and Bruckner.
