Augustus, John (1785-1859)

US pioneer probation officer and philanthropist. A shoemaker by trade, Augustus is regarded as the ‘father of probation’ in the USA. From 1841 onwards, he acted as counsel and posted bail for 1,946 people, using his own money and contributions from others.
