Brown, John Carter (1797-1874)

US book collector who assembled a unique library of pre-1800 Americana, eventually housed at Brown University.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of the philanthropist and industrialist Nicholas Brown.

Brown, John Carter (1934- )

US museum director whose speciality was 17th-century Dutch art. As the director of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1969-92, he presided over a period of great expansion in the museum's exhibitions and public presence.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He studied first at Harvard, then at Munich University with Bernard Berenson in 1958, at the Netherlands Institute of Art History in 1960, and at New York University.

Two papers - the address intended for high school students at the opening of an exhibition on Aldus Manutius at the John Carter Brown Library (1984) and the Literaturbericht on schooling in western Europe during the Renaissance (1990) are clearly ephemera and should probably have been omitted.
