Brown, John Carter (1797–1874)

US book collector who assembled a unique library of pre-1800 Americana, eventually housed at Brown University.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of the philanthropist and industrialist Nicholas Brown.

Brown, John Carter (1934– )

US museum director whose speciality was 17th-century Dutch art. As the director of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1969–92, he presided over a period of great expansion in the museum's exhibitions and public presence.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He studied first at Harvard, then at Munich University with Bernard Berenson in 1958, at the Netherlands Institute of Art History in 1960, and at New York University.
