Stevens, John Paul (1920– )

US Supreme Court associate justice from 1975, nominated by President Gerald Ford. His opinions and dissents have been wide ranging, taking the view that the death penalty is not by definition cruel and unusual punishment in Jurek v. Texas (1976), and that the burning of the US flag in protest is unconstitutional in Texas v. Johnson.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Stevens served in the US Navy 1942–45, graduated from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University Law School, and served as clerk to US Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge in 1947. After entering private practice in 1949, he also taught at Chicago and Northwestern before being appointed, in 1970, judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
