Sherman, John (1823–1900)

US Republican politician. Under Rutherford Hayes he was secretary of the Treasury 1877–81, and under William McKinley secretary of state 1897–98. He was responsible for the Sherman Anti-Trust Act 1890.

Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, and became a lawyer 1844. He entered Congress 1855, and in 1859 was chair of the Committee on Ways and Means. He was senator from Ohio 1861–77 and 1881–97.
