John V (1689-1750)

King of Portugal 1706-50, grandson of John IV. During his reign, Portugal allied with England in the War of the Spanish Succession.

John IV consolidated the power of the church and promoted learning, while the strength of the army and navy declined. At the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, Portuguese ownership of the Amazon region was confirmed by the Treaty of Utrecht (1713).
