John I (1357-1433)

King of Portugal from 1385. An illegitimate son of Pedro I, he was elected by the Cortes (parliament). His claim was supported by an English army against the rival king of Castile, thus establishing the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance in 1386.

He married Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt.
