Johnson, Alvin Saunders (1874-1971)

US social scientist and educator. He was a founder and an editor of the New Republic 1917. Joining with some of America's greatest scholars, Johnson was one of the founders of the New School for Social Research in New York City, serving as its director 1923-45. Johnson's memoir, Progress: An Autobiography, was published 1952.

Born near Homer, Nebraska, USA, Johnson was educated at the University of Nebraska, saw service in the Spanish-American War 1898, and received a PhD in economics from Columbia 1902, subsequently teaching at several universities.
