Johnson, Eldridge Reeves (1867-1945)

US inventor and business executive. He developed a spring-driven motor for the gramophone in 1896 and founded the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1901. His advertising trademark, ‘His Master's Voice’, became known worldwide. His company's fortunes declined during the 1920s; in 1927, Victor was merged with the Radio Corporation of America. He gave generously to the University of Pennsylvania.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was apprenticed to a machinist in Philadelphia.
