Johnson, Hiram Warren (1866–1945)

US politician. He was the ‘Bull Moose’ party candidate for vice president in Theodore Roosevelt's unsuccessful bid to regain the presidency in 1912. Elected to the Senate 1917, Johnson served there until his death. He was an unyielding isolationist, opposing US involvement in World War I as well as membership in the League of Nations and World Court.

Born in Sacramento, California, Johnson attended the University of California and was admitted to the bar in 1888. In 1902 he established a law practice in San Francisco before entering politics and serving as governor of California 1911–17.
