Johnson, Lionel Pigot (1867-1902)

English poet. His two volumes of poetry, Poems 1895 and Ireland, with Other Poems 1897, drew much of their inspiration from ancient Celtic legend. His best-known piece is ‘On the Statue of King Charles at Charing Cross’.

He was born in Broadstairs, Kent. After studying at Winchester and New College, Oxford, he settled in London, contributing critical articles and reviews to various periodicals. In 1891 he was converted to Roman Catholicism and became deeply interested in the Irish renaissance. His Reviews and Critical Papers were published 1921.
