Johnson

US photographic explorers and lecturers. They were married in 1910 and travelled to the South Pacific and Africa, where they photographed the native peoples and wildlife. They were the first people to photograph Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya from the air. They produced some 20 films to accompany the lectures they gave throughout the USA which provided many Americans with their first view of these exotic places.

Osa was born in Chanute, Kansas, and Martin in Rockford, Illinois. Martin had been drawn to travel as a youth; he became a photographer and sailed on the Snark 1907–09. On his return to the USA, Martin opened a theatre in Independence, Illinois, where he showed pictures of his trip as he lectured; it was after attending such a showing that Osa met him. Martin died in an airplane crash in Los Angeles. Osa wrote a best-selling account of their lives, I Married Adventure 1940, and many children's books, including Osa Johnson's Jungle Friends 1939.

Johnson

Town in Lamoille County, north-central Vermont; population (1990) 3,200. Johnson lies on the flats of the Lamoille River at its junction with the Gihon River, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Mount Mansfield.

Industries in Johnson include the production of lumber, textiles, clothing, machinery, talc, and woollen goods. Johnson State College (1828) is here, and the town is an artists' colony.
