Johnson City

City in Washington, Carter, and Sullivan counties, northeast Tennessee, just south of the Virginia border, in the Appalachian Mountains, 146 km/91 mi northeast of Knoxville; population (2000) 55,500. It is the centre of an agricultural region; industries include tobacco, furniture, electronic components, building materials, metals, textiles, and food processing. Johnson City is the home of Milligan College (1866) and East Tennessee State University (1911).

It was first settled in 1857 and incorporated as a city in 1869.
