Johnson, Lady Bird (Claudia Alta) (1912-2007)

US first lady. She married Lyndon Johnson in 1934, and helped finance his first election campaign. She supported the ‘war on poverty’, the Headstart programme, and worked for the ‘beautification’ of Washington, DC. After her husband's presidency, she wrote White House Diary.

She was born in Karnack, Texas, and studied journalism.
