Johnston Atoll

Coral island in the mid-Pacific, lying between the Marshall Islands and Hawaii; area 2.8 sq km/1.1 sq mi. The island is only 2.4 m/8 ft above sea level and subject to hurricanes and tidal waves. It has the status of a National Wildlife Refuge but was contaminated by fallout from nuclear-weapons testing in 1962, and has since 1971 been used as a repository for chemical weapons left over from the Korean and Vietnam wars. An unincorporated territory of the USA, it is administered by the US Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA).
