Johor Bahru

Capital of Johor state in southern Peninsular Malaysia, situated on the coast 24 km/15 mi north of Singapore city; population (2000 est) 384,600. Johor Bahru is the Malaysian customs and immigration point for movement to and from Singapore. A causeway (1,038 m/3,405 ft long) for freight and passenger traffic was opened in 1923 across the Johor Straits, linking Johor Bahru and Singapore, and carrying a six-lane highway, a double track railway, and a water supply pipeline. It is a commercial centre for locally-produced rubber, palm oil, bauxite, and fruit. Industries include textiles, oil refining, and fruit canning.

Johor Bahru is home to the Technological University of Malaysia (1904). The Abu Bakar Royal Museum is housed in the former palace of the sultans of Johor, built in 1866.
