Joliet

City and port in northeastern Illinois, USA, on the Des Plaines River and the Illinois Waterway, 60 km/37 mi southwest of Chicago; seat of Will County; population (2000) 106,200. It is an important transportation and industrial centre; industries include building materials, chemicals, oil refining, heavy construction machinery, and paper.

Joliet was settled in 1833 and incorporated as a city in 1852. In the 19th century limestone quarried in Joliet was used throughout the Midwest.

The city is named after the French explorer Louis Joliet, who first visited the area in 1673. Joliet is the seat of the College of Saint Francis (1925), and is the site of the state penitentiary (prison).
