Joinvile

City in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, 130 km/81 mi northwest of Florianópolis; population (1996) 372,203. The state's second-largest city, Joinvile is situated about 35 km/22 mi inland on the estuary of the São Francisco do Sul River, and the outlet for its trade is the port of São Francisco do Sul. Its chief exports are timber, yerba maté (Paraguayan tea), and coffee. Other industries in this manufacturing centre, which was founded by German immigrants, are textile production, brewing, and light engineering.

The city has a strong German influence. The Prince of Joinvile's mansion has a collection of objects from the original German settlement. The archaeological museum has a collection of Sambaquis period objects dating from 5,000 BC. There is a flower festival held in the city every September.
