Jolivet, André

    0.02 sec.

Jolivet, André (1905–1974)

French composer. He was interested in primitive forms of religion, magic, and mysticism, and believed that music is a cosmic force endowed with magical properties. His music is intended to convey such magical qualities; it employs a wide range of rhythmic and dynamic effects to produce an appropriately receptive mood in the listener. His work includes symphonic works, ballets, and chamber pieces, as well as music for films and plays.

He was a pupil of Paul Le Flem and Edgard Varèse, and formed the group ‘La Jeune France’ with Yves Baudrier, Jean Yves Daniel-Lesur, and Olivier Messiaen in 1936. He became director of music at the Comédie Française, Paris, in 1945.
