Jones, Ernest Charles (1819–1869)

German-born English radical who was a leading figure in the Chartist (see Chartism) reform movement of the mid-19th century.

Jones was born in Berlin, and studied law at the University of Göttingen. In 1844 he became a barrister at the Middle Temple, in London. Jones joined the Chartist movement in 1845 and became one of its most noted orators, but his support for physical violence led to his imprisonment for sedition (1848–50).
