Jones, Gwyneth (1936- )

Welsh soprano. She was a central figure in the Bayreuth Festival during the late 1960s and 1970s and has performed as Sieglinde in Die Walküre and Desdemona in Otello.

She studied at the Royal College of Music in London and in Siena, Italy, and Zurich, Switzerland. She achieved her breakthrough role when she stood in for US soprano Leontyne Price as Leonora in a production of Il Trovatore at the Royal Opera House in 1964. She went on to perform around Europe and the USA.
