Cavendish

Small settlement in Queens County, on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, Canada, 39 km/24 mi northwest of Charlottetown; population (1996 est) 250. Cavendish is the focus of a major resort area, close to one end of the 40 km/25 mi strip of coastal beach and dunes which makes up the Prince Edward Island National Park, and to a number of entertainment parks.

Cavendish was named by an early European resident, William Winter, in honour of his patron, Frederick Cavendish. It is also the place where author Lucy Maude Montgomery was raised and wrote many of her books, including the Anne of Green Gables series. Her house, with its green gables, is visited by several hundred thousand people annually.
