Jones, William (1675-1749)

Welsh mathematician who is credited as being the first to use of the symbol pi to denote the circumference/diameter ratio of a circle.

Jones was born in Anglesey, north Wales. He was a friend of Isaac Newton, whose mathematical papers he edited in 1711. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712.
