Jones, George (1931- )

US country singer, one of the genre's most popular male vocalists. His expressive vocal technique is usually employed on sentimental ballads, for example ‘Good Year for the Roses’ (1970) and ‘The Grand Tour’ (1974), or honky-tonk (dance-hall) numbers, such as ‘The Race Is On’ (1964), often in duets.

Jones was born in Texas and first recorded in 1954. During and after his marriage to singer Tammy Wynette (1942-98), they made many records together, including the hits ‘We're Gonna Hold On’ (1973) and ‘Golden Ring’ (1976).
