Jongen, Joseph (1873-1953)| Belgian composer. He taught at the conservatories of Liège and Brussels. Most of his compositions are orchestral or chamber pieces. |
| He studied at the Liège Conservatory. He was awarded a prize from the Académie Royale in 1893 and the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1897. After teaching for a short time at the Liège Conservatory, he went to Rome, Italy, and later travelled in Germany and France, taking up a professorship at Liège in 1903. In 1914-18 he was in England as a war refugee, but returned to Liège until 1920, when he became professor at the Brussels Conservatory, of which he was later appointed director. |
