Jongen, Joseph (1873–1953)

Belgian composer. He taught at the conservatories of Liège and Brussels. Most of his compositions are orchestral or chamber pieces.

He studied at the Liège Conservatory. He was awarded a prize from the Académie Royale in 1893 and the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1897. After teaching for a short time at the Liège Conservatory, he went to Rome, Italy, and later travelled in Germany and France, taking up a professorship at Liège in 1903. In 1914–18 he was in England as a war refugee, but returned to Liège until 1920, when he became professor at the Brussels Conservatory, of which he was later appointed director.

Fantaisie sur deux Noëls wallons (1902), symphonic poem Lalla Rookh (after Thomas Moore, 1904), symphony (1910), Impressions d'Ardennes (1913), Tableaux pittoresques (1917), Symphonie concertante for organ and orchestra (1926), Passecaille et Gigue for orchestra (1930), Pièce symphonique for piano and wind orchestra, violin concerto, harp concerto (1944), suite for viola and orchestra.

Chamber

three string quartets (1894, 1916, 1921), concerto for wind quintet (1923), two serenades for string quartet, piano trio, two violin and piano sonatas, cello sonata.

Sonata eroica for organ; songs.
